Hackers managed to break into Syniverse, a relatively unknown keep company that provides backbone services to major wireless carriers about the world, in a campaign that could suffer impacted millions of cellphone users, reports suggest.

According to Motherboard, Syniverse forms a critical part of the global telecommunications infrastructure, and counts the likes of AT&T, Verizon, Vodafone, T-Mobile, among its customers.

In a filing with the United States Security and Exchange Delegation (SEC), the company disclosed that threat actors managed to arrive at "unauthorised access to databases within its network on respective occasions, and that login information allowing accession to operating room from its Lepton Data Transfer (EDT) environment was compromised for approximately 235 of its customers."

The incident, which was perceived in Whitethorn 2021, but dates back to May 2016, is discussed in the section where it talks or so the risks associated with the company owing to the nature of its business.

Global privacy disaster?

Syniverse hasn't discussed the incident outside of the SEC filing, and didn't respond to Motherboard's questions about the reach and scale leaf of the breach.

However a quondam Syniverse employee unveiled that EDT systems experience information on wholly types of call records. Another anonymous individual common with telephone carriers suggests that the Syniverse hackers could have had access to metadata so much as length and cost, caller and receiver's numbers, the placement of the parties in the call, besides as the content of SMS text messages.

"Syniverse has access to the communication of hundreds of millions, if not billions, of people around the human beings. A 5-year breach of one of Syniverse's primary systems is a spherical concealment disaster," security researcher Karsten Nohl told Motherboard.

Even so, the former Syniverse employee suggests the breach is probably more embarrassing than crushing since nothing untoward seems to induce come out of it in over five years.
